Willie Clancy and Singing

「最近の IRTRAD-L（ハリーとジム）」で少し指摘したハリーの論争への復帰の出発点はどこかと探していて、ようやく見つかった。IRTRAD-L の（2005年）3月10日の Chris Brennan の "Willie Clancy and Singing" というポストだ。

　クリス・ブレナンは伝統歌唱に関心があるが、その目的のためにウィリー・クランシー・サマー・スクール（WCSS）は行く価値があるのかというのが、提起している問題である。彼がそのように思うのも無理はなく、現在の WCSS は器楽の方面で著名で、歌のクラスに関しては評判を聞かない。

　公式頁 を見ると、Traditional Singing Workshops について、次のように書いてある。

These will take the form of lectures, group discussions, class participation and demonstrations by traditional singers in Irish and English. These workshops will be conducted by Brian Mullan, BBC Radio Foyle, and Ian Lee, Producer, RTÉ. These are not singing classes.

　この説明を読んでブレナンが疑問を呈するのは分かる。どんなワークショップなのか、この説明ではよく分からない。おまけに、ぼくも寡聞にしてこの講師の人たちのことは聞いたことがない。

　以前はこうじゃなかったらしい。Tom Munnelly の（2005年）3月15日付のポストは注目すべき内容を含んでいる。議論の過程で使われた

singing can be "learned, but not taught"

という言葉について、それを言ったのは私だと、名乗りを上げたのである。その部分を引用する。文中の Jim というのは、Jim Carroll のことである。

I did, Jim, I did. In fact it was the guiding principle when myself and Virginia Blankenhorn began the singing workshops in the Willie Clancy Summer School and ran them in a cycle which did not repeat itself for a four year period. It is now the same every year. Have stayed out of this debate because I know that any comments I have to make on the subject would (rightly) be seen as being coloured by my total disillusion with the event as it deteriorated into the Willie Clancy Festival. So, over and out.

　なんと、以前はトム・マネリーとヴァジニア・ブランケンホーンがワークショップを担当しており、その時のワークショップの方針が 'singing can be "learned, but not taught"' だったのだ。これなら、ぼくも行きたかった。この二人ほど伝統歌に関して識見に富む人たちはめったにいない。

　だが、今では「ワークショップ」とは言っても上記のような性格のはっきりしないものだし、歌に関しては金曜日（7月8日）のリサイタルが目立っているくらいだ。IRTRAD-L ではこのあと議論は進んでゆき、クレア県ではもはや歌は死滅しかかっているという爆弾発言まで飛出す。そのような白熱の議論の渦中に今ハリー・ブラッドリーはいる。
