６連の
腕もなく、足もなく、鶏もない卵のようになってしまったのね
は、説明が必要です。腕もなく、足もない、まるで丸い卵のような姿になったということですが、言葉の遊びで chickenless を加えたと思います。
５連のサルーン島は、セイロンのことだと言われています。
19世紀初頭、アイルランド軍がインド東部の兵役についた頃のバラッドだという説もあります。Ceylon は英語ではうしろにアクセントがあり、シラーンのように聞こえるかもしれません。おそらく、Sri Lanka の英語訛りの形なのでしょう。
この〔1連の〕 Athy とは何かということですが、地名でしょう。一番の候補はアイルランドはキルデア県の地名です。この町の頁も参考になります。アイルランド語では
Baile Átha Í
です。〔英語の発音はアサイで、'eye' や 'cry' と押韻。〕
〔メモ： 町名 Athy の名は、2世紀の族長の名 Ae に由来（11世紀の説も）。Ae は同地の川（River Barrow）の渡り場で殺されたという。アイルランド語名は「イーの渡り場（イーが渡った浅瀬）の〔あった〕町」 'town of (the) ford of Ae' の意。綴り 'ae' は現代アイルランド語では /e:/ の音になる。〕
