Dán na Marbh (Poem of the Dead)

Dán na Marbh (Poem of the Dead)

Tá 'n Mhaighdean a Bheannaithe, tá sí ag cionn do leapa,
(There is the Blessed Virgin, she is at the head of your bed,)

Thug sí aingle Dé 's na flaithis léithe, tá siadsan ag gardáil d'anam;
(She took along angels of God and of heaven, they are guarding your soul;)

Tá Íosa Críost é féin, tá sé thíos ag bun do leapa,
(There is Jesus Christ himself, he is down at the foot of your bed,)

Tá súileas agams', a dhuine bhoicht, na' raibh do bhreithiúnas trom.
(I am relieved, poor person, that your judgment was not heavy.)

[Tá do chairde 's tá do chara cruinnithe thart ar do leabaidh,]
[There are your friends and there is your friend gathered round your bed,]

Tá siad ag stánadh go géar ar do cholann atá fágthaí,
(They are staring sharply on your body which is abandoned,)

Tá siad uilige faoi bhrón, tá siad uilig faoi bhuaireamh,
(They are all in sorrow, they are all in vexatiion,)

Chan fhuil fhios agats', a dhuine bhoicht, an bhfuil siadsan ann.
(You do not know, poor person, if they are there.)

Ach tá 's agat, an Mhaighdean a Bheannaithe, go bhfuil sí ag cionn do leapa,
(But you know, Blessed Virgin, that she is at the head of your bed,)
