CARE

　英語に "care package" という語句がある。親元を離れて暮らす大学生が家から送ってもらった「差し入れ」をこう呼ぶことがあると、マーク・ピーターセンさんは言う。元は、国際援助団体として世界最大の NGO の一つ CARE からの発送物資 "CARE Package" を指した。"CARE goods" 「ケア物資」という言いかたもある。
　いずれにせよ、「愛を込めた」というニュアンスが入っている。団体名 CARE は Cooperative for American Relief to Everywhere とか Cooperative for Assistance and Relief to Everywhere という、とってつけたような acronym （頭字語）だが、これは "care" の語感を活かすための工夫だろう。
　このほど、CARE International の一員としてイラクで十年以上、医療や食物などの物資やきれいな水を、必要とする人に届ける活動を指揮してきたアイルランド人マーガレット・ハッサンさん（59、国籍はアイルランド、英国、イラク）が正体不明の武装勢力に拳銃で射殺されたとされる映像が中東のテレビ局アル・ジャジーラに届いた。彼女は10月19日にバグダッドで誘拐されていた。
　マーガレットさんのきょうだいたち（Michael, Deirdre, Kathryn and Geraldine Fitzsimons）が発した声明は心をうつ（Irish Times 11月17日付）。

Our hearts are broken. We have kept hoping for as long as we could, but now we have to accept that Margaret has probably gone, and at last her suffering has ended.

　CARE の英国支部では11月16日付で次のような声明をウェブサイトに載せた。

Mrs. Hassan was an extraordinary woman who dedicated her life to the poor and disadvantaged in Iraq, particularly the children. The whole of CARE is in mourning.

Through her courage, tenacity and commitment, Mrs. Hassan assisted more than seventeen million Iraqis living in the most difficult of circumstances. Everyone who met her was touched by her personality and compassion.

CARE staff and volunteers will continue working around the world fighting poverty, responding to humanitarian emergencies and helping to rebuild communities.

　全 CARE は彼女を追悼している。このような悲痛な事件にもかかわらず、今後も貧困との戦い、人道支援を世界中で続けるとしているのは、せめてもの慰め。
　ぼくはこれから、"care" という英単語を見るたびに彼女のことを想いだすかもしれない。ご冥福を祈ります。
