Cat Stevens is favourite ...

　キャット・スティーヴンズの新録音曲 ＜Father and Son＞ （彼の1970年の曲）が今度のクリスマスの売上げ一位のシングルになるだろうという記事を読んで、ちょっと引っかかった。

　いや、内容にではなくて、その英語にである。この用法は気になる。私の知る限り、どの辞書にも採録されていない用法に見える。その BBC News （2004年10月14日付）から引用する（文中の太字は私）。

Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, is favourite to have the British Christmas number one single with a duet with Ronan Keating.

Islam, who recently hit the headlines after being refused entry to the US, has not released a single for 30 years.

But the pair have now recorded a version of his 1970 song Father and Son, which was a hit for Keating's former band Boyzone in 1995.

　私のみるところ、この 'favourite' の用法はやや特殊である。けれど、読む人はまず誤解しないだろう。結論から言うと、ここでの意味は「キャット・スティーヴンズは英国のクリスマス向けシングルの本命である」ということだ。

　つまり、'favourite' はここでは「本命」「一番人気」の意味で使われている。そのことは、それ以下の記事全文を読めば明らかである。

　問題は品詞だ。明らかに名詞に見えるが、無冠詞で使われているところが引っかかる。普通は不定冠詞か定冠詞がつくか、複数形で用いられる。つまり、無冠詞で「大本命」というような抽象名詞的な扱いを受けているのではないかというのが私のほんの不見点の憶測。

　なお、品詞としては形容詞も考えられる。が、通常、形容詞としては 'favourite' （'favorite'）は限定形容詞（attributive adjective）として用いられるので、ここでのような叙述用法（predicative use）で用いられることはない。*1

　ついでというわけでもないが、記事の続きを少し引用しておこう。
