Tommy Sands: The Heart's a Wonder

　アイルランドの良心の声トミー・サンズの1995年のアルバム。

　ザ・サンズ・ファミリーの一員としても知られ、またアイルランドを代表するシンガー・ソングライターとしても知られるトミー・サンズのこのアルバムはピート・シーガーやドローレス・キーンをゲストに迎えたアルバムとして話題になった。

　が、アルバムを通して聞くと、トラック3 ＜Sudako (And The Paper Cranes)＞ の冒頭のギターの音にまず耳を奪われる。まごうかたなき、スティーヴ・クーニーの音である。続いて歌われるのは 'a thousand paper cranes' を作れば願いがかなうよと聞かされる 'Sadako' のこと。まさしく、これは広島の「原爆の子」像で知られる佐々木禎子さん（2歳で被爆し10年後に白血病で亡くなった）のことに間違いない。平和記念公園や広島平和記念資料館（禎子さんが折った鶴も展示されている）を訪れた人で禎子さんのことを知らない人はいない。詳しい情報は このサイト にある。

　この歌のリフレーンは胸を打つ。

　ほかにも、アルツハイマー病となった母を療養所に送りだす別れを歌ったトラック12 ＜Good-bye Love (There's No One Leaving)＞ や有名なトラック4 ＜The Age of Uncertainty＞ など、深い印象を残す歌は多い。

　が、残念ながら上に挙げた米盤は廃盤（ひょっとしてどこかに在庫はあるかもしれない）。原盤は EMI だけれど、これも廃盤。こういう名作が聞き継がれればよいのになあ。なお、トミー・サンズのサイト では、このアルバムは残念ながら在庫がないみたいだが、他の一部のアルバムはまだ入手できるようだ。それもトミーのサイン入りで。

　21世紀の終わるころ、世界がまだあるとすれば、その原因の一つは、けんか腰の（cantankerous）人間に平和と一致をもたらそうとする世界中の心あるソングライターやミュージシャンのおかげだろうと、ピート・シーガーは本アルバムのジャケット裏に書いている。そして、（アイルランド語の）歌の国アイルランドの歌い手は、今やツーンとくる（tangy）英語と協力しながらその歌の伝統を続けていると書く（太字は私）。

If there is a world here at the end of the 21st Century, one of the main reasons will be that songwriters and musicians around the world have decided to be more than "mere entertainers". Not that they won't still be entertainers, but they'll use their abilities as entertainers to help pull this cantankerous human race together before we blow ourselves apart. And what Tommy Sands and his friends are doing right now is setting a good example, not just for Bosnia and Rwanda, but for human beings everywhere. The musicians of old Ireland created some of the world's greatest songs. If they are listening somewhere right now, these musicians are intoning a Gaelic prayer and a cheer for the great music being carried on and being re-created now in partnership with the tangy contradictory English language. The twinkly toes of children today will be dancing tomorrow. Dancing together.

　このような言葉を読むと、アイルランド語の歌と英語の歌、あるいは広く原語の歌と翻訳された歌という古くて新しい問題のことも考えてしまう。それは単に言語だけの問題ではなくて、それに伴う歴史社会文化もろもろの問題を抱えこむことになるのだけど、トミーの姿勢を見ていると考えさせられる。人類が百年後にも存在するかという問題を突きつけられると、ぼくらに出来ることは何かということを自問せざるを得ない。

　なお、トミー・サンズの歌は世界の言語に訳され、ドイツの学校では教材として使われているらしい。2002年には米 Nevada 大学がトミーに対し、'musical ambassador for peace and understanding' という功績をたたえ名誉博士号を贈っている。Danú のとりあげた ＜Co. Down＞ （《The Road Less Traveled》 所収）は BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2004 の 'Best Original Song' 賞を受賞した。
