心変わりしてしまった恋人を唄う'Loving Hannah'

　２枚目にして確乎たる地位をきずきあげた若きフォーク・アーティスト。プロデュースをカレン・トウィードがおこなっており、その結果いくつもの興味深いことが起きている。
　ひとつは、フィンランドのティモ・アラコティラが弦楽四重奏の編曲を 2 曲でおこなっていること。

　もうひとつは、ジャズのシャンティ・ポール・ジャヤシンタ（ザ・ザパティスタス）がチェロとフリューゲルホーンで参加していること。このあたりの人脈はカレンとティモの傑作アルバム《メイ・マンデー》と重なる。

　ベスト・トラックは 'Loving Hannah'.
　本盤には歌詞はついていないので、この歌の歌詞を下に書いておく。何度も聞くうちに覚えてしまったもので、別に特に聞取ったものではない。
　よく似た歌詞の歌に、'Going to Mass Last Sunday' がある ('Courting is a pleasure between my love and I ...')。
　心変わりしてしまった恋人ハンナへの思いをつづる男性の歌。
　なお、いうまでもないが、ビル・ジョーンズのビルはベリンダ（女性）の愛称である。
　深刻な歌のはずだが、暗さより、むしろほろにがいユーモアすら感じとれる。「目がきょろっとしたので心変わりしたと分かったのさ」というのがおかしい。もちろん、浮気心を表現する常套句ではあるのだが、何度も繰返し歌われると、思わずほほえましくさえなってくる。しかし、ことによると、ユーモアは隠れ蓑で、それだけ、失恋の痛手は深いのかもしれない。
　ビルの歌、ピアノ、ホィッスル、どれをとってもすばらしい。

　評価―― ★★★☆
